Back in 1959, Elroy Meyer looked around his hometown of O’Fallon, Missouri and noticed that something was missing: bowling! The nearest alley was 12 miles away, and his burgeoning community wanted something a little bit closer to satisfy their bowling appetite.
So he got to work. Elroy recruited help from his brothers-in-law and built a 21,000 square foot facility with 16 bowling lanes and a restaurant. That building is where you’ll still find O’Fallon Bowl today, having been owned and operated by the family ever since.
Elroy himself passed away in 1982, at which point his wife Bernice took over operations, and today his children and grandchildren oversee the business.
In 2009, O’Fallon Bowl celebrated its 50th anniversary, and in 2012 it underwent a significant renovation. They now offer 42” monitors, Brunswick professional lanes and flat screen TVs in the bar area.
Prices are cheap, the food is tasty and there are a number of special events offered, including a 9-pin no-tap every Saturday at 8pm with cash prizes for teams finishing in the final round. Additional deals are also announced on the O’Fallon Bowl Twitter feed and Facebook Page, such as Buy 1 appetizer Get 1 free on Saturdays.
The menu at the restaurant is varied, ranging from Tilapia sandwiches to deluxe pizzas. There is also a daily special 7 days a week, featuring items like BBQ Pork Steak and Fried Catfish.
O’Fallon bowl proves that old-time traditions and technological advancements don’t have to be mutually exclusive. It’s evolved along the way, but has been providing the same type of fun community meeting spot for over 50 years.
