Bowling Alleys USA reader Paul wrote in to us to suggest a Candlepin alley in Shelburne Falls, MA that has a special claim to fame.
The Shelburne Falls Bowling Alley has been open since 1906, which gives it the impressive title of second oldest bowling alley in North America.
The alley website commemorates this history by featuring articles from local newspapers from the time of the alley’s opening in January 1906. A brief excerpt:
“C.W. Ward’s amusement annex which was opened to the public last week has become quite a popular rendezvous for the young people of both sexes.”
The article also addresses the alley’s ladies’ night which appears to have been quite popular, with “about 20 young women with there escorts there trying their skill at bowling and pool.”
Some bowlers bemoan the fact that today bowling alleys are becoming “entertainment centers” with a host of attractions aside from the lanes, but a look at the early days of this alley suggests that this has always been the case.
“Mr. Ward plans to present at least one vaudeville attraction each week, with a dancing party or two on other evenings. There will be musical attractions every night.”
Perhaps the big bowling chains ought to take note and institute a vaudeville night.
Shelburne Falls Bowling Alley has evolved over the years, of course, but today they still offer a variety of attractions. There’s open bowling, leagues, parties and a lounge.
If you ever find yourself in the area, try your luck candlepin bowling at a site that has been in operation for over a century.
